Crete, an island with a long tradition in olive cultivation, is world-famous for its excellent olive oil! In this blessed land, Tzanakakis family olive groves are scattered around the village of Filaki Apokoronou in Chania, in the northern part of Crete.

The microclimate of this semi-mountainous region, that is situated at an ideal distance from the sea, in combination with a soil rich in nutrients gives the produce premium quality and fine taste. Over the years our trees are carefully cultivated with the utmost respect for the environment and our family’s heritage. In our property that covers about 70 acres we grow our trees following a sustainable process that ensures healthy trees and a high quality end product.

Among our olive trees there are also some that are estimated to be over 100 years old! This makes them extremely valuable and important for us as they represent a link to our past! Our fields feel like a true home and we are very proud to be able to honor the tradition of our ancestors, working with the same passion and using fresh ideas and contemporary methods.

Tzanakakis organic extra virgin olive oil is a blend of two flavorful varieties, 60% Koroneiki and 40% Tsounati. Koroneiki or Liani olive is considered the “queen” of the Greek varieties, originating from the south of the Peloponnese, a region that is famous for olive cultivation!

What sets it apart from other varieties is that the fruit is harvested early when it is still green. Koroneiki produces the finest extra virgin olive oil that is characterized by extremely low acidity, an intense aroma and a spicy flavor. The Tsounati variety, also known as Mastolia, dates back to the Minoan era! It is cultivated throughout the country and it is mostly found in the oldest groves.

The trees grow mostly in rocky areas, they are resistant to cold and high altitude is ideal for their development. The Tsounati variety gives us high quality olive oil, rich in polyphenols with a medium bitterness and spiciness.
